Report: Josh Howard to sign with Jazz

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

Add Josh Howard to the list of small forward free agents who have decided to not sign with the San Antonio Spurs.

According to Michael Lee of The Washington Post, Howard will sign a 1-year deal with the Utah Jazz.

psjhowardThe Spurs have been looking feverishly for a small forward since word came out the team could use their amnesty clause on Richard Jefferson. San Antonio even want as far as to tell Howard they would like for him to wear the black and silver and even reportedly offered him a deal.

And now that Howard will take his talents to Utah, it seems Jefferson will more than likely be staying on with San Antonio when opening night rolls around in a few days.

So now all free agent small forwards the Spurs reportedly pursued (Caron Butler, Vince Carter, Howard and Grant Hill) chose not to suit up with San Antonio.

What do you have to say Spurs fans? Now that it seems RJ will be with the Spurs for the upcoming season, where do you stand on this topic?

I, for one do not believe the Spurs were so far away from winning a couple of 7 game series last year. I am also not sure that bidding on a big slow will help that much. I have always felt like Bonner is a three position player. That leaves only TD, TS and Blair on the roster for the 4 & 5 position. Why not try to get Dice back for one more year. Add that to the big slow already on the roster and bring on the Richards kid that is said to be one or two years away and lets do this thing. Having MB and DB on the floor at the same time wouldn't bother me so much if any of these other bigs were out there.

On the topic of FAs and our need for a big.. Tiago's stats from last year: 4.6 on .529, 3.4, 0.4, 0.5, 0.3 in 12.3 minutes really isn't all that bad, especially considering his playing time came sporadically and he was COMPLETELY lost whenever he was on the court. Not to mention he had a lot of pressure to perform under a completely foreign atmosphere. With a year under his belt, I wouldn't be surprised to see those numbers jump up significantly. Even RJ made the jump this past year so there's no reason why it won't happen for Tiago who has a MUCH better bbIQ. That's not to say that I wouldn't mind another formidable back up big but I think Tiago will surprise a lot of people this year.

As for the 3 spot, I'm somewhat relieved that we didn't find a replacement for RJ. Especially if that replacement meant Josh Howard. Anderson was the Big 12 player of the year and was "flat out, the steal of the draft" (Vitale) ..and we all knew that our organization had done it again by his shooting and D that shined throughout his brief string of games before he went down in the beginning of last season. He is listed as a 2 but he was used as a 3 most of the time last year and he was athletic enough to guard opposing SFs, very well for that matter. Although he didn't get much playing time after he recovered, I think he was with the team enough to internalize our system conceptually.

If plugged into the right lineup, Kawhi's physique, D, hustle, and youth wil make him a remarkably effective piece even in his rookie year. There's a reason why we gave George up.. This kid is going to be a star, it's just a matter of time.

The condensed season might be a blessing in disguise.. Pop will be forced to play all three players mentioned above more than he'd probably like, allowing them to develop at a faster pace. Come playoff time, I could see Leonard and Anderson contributing heavy minutes and us laughing at ourselves for even contemplating about bringing in Josh Howard.

Rocky Mountain high. Lol. I think Doug Thomas could turn into a good ball player.

ok I have said this time and time again, RJ is the best possible option at SF given the circumstances (lack of money, Spurs system, shortened training camp, shooting ability).

As far as big man goes none of the names out there really excite me, I rather trust in Tiago to turn things around.

@Spursforever69 agree with everything you said. Every team is in the market for big men so I think this year's free agent class of big men will be getting contracts higher then what they are worth.

Yeah fellas this does suck but perhaps the SAS can shift their focus to finding a big man. TD needs help and I am still not comfortable with Splitter as back up.

We don't know what the Spurs offered or what the Jazz offered in playing time, etc. I doubt we would have been better off. Discovery can be fun. Others start rookies, RJ is staying for this year, and even if we don't win it all this year, the next 6-10 could be great. Kawhi will likely be an all star type player in few years, guys growing in the d elague like Lance Thomas, are not bad as role players, and all the young guys will be worked in the next few years ( Richards, Hanga. All we need is a solid big to play with Splitter and TD for the next few years. From the mouth og MG, Doug Thomas is looking good, who knows.

I'm sorry to say this but all of those mother@$?!"...have their heads up their as$&@ they think they are too good for this franchise. They are all goin out like real losers. What does veteran experience do for them if they can't even choose a good team to play with

I guess Kawhi will possibly take Bonners spot.

This sucks well I think they need to use the people they have at that position like Idk James Anderson he played brilliant in the few games that he played and Kawhi is going to be a beast, I was watching some local crap and they asked who will have a better career Kawhi or Jimmer they went with Kawhi.....We need to just wait till TD retires ($20 mill off the payroll) and I think RJ would be better suited playing with Ford, RJ still has a lil bit left he did play great in the regular season just shitty in the playoffs we know, BUT he did get better so keep him, we have the 3rd or 4th highest payroll at $73 mill so keep him screw it.......Ford, RJ, Neal, Splitter and Bonner I guess......Either way I think the Spurs are going to lose about 17 games. And yes I do beleive that Blair will start.

i really think this has a lot to do with peter holts dealings in the CBA/lockout bargaining. out of all the free agents we really tried or went after, every one of them with the exception of butler signed for what we could have paid them. the only thing in utah (baring a ridiculous contract) that would be attractive to howard would have to be devin harris, other then that, utah kinda sucks and isnt making the playoffs. the only way the spurs get anything else they want/need is via trade which they have very little trade assets so i say pull up that training camp roster and say HELLO to your 2011-2012 SAN ANTONIO SPURS cause its not getting any better!

The last of the prospects signed with the jazz, J.Howard. What now spurs? No small forward, no big guy. Well, there are the d-league players. Good luck next draft time. With TD graduating, the spurs can't afford not to draft a big guy.
