'Mutual interest' between Evans, Wizards

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

As free agents Grant Hill and Caron Butler have elected to sign with the Suns and Clippers respectively, the crop of potential small forwards for the San Antonio Spurs has dwindled.

The Spurs were reportedly interested in signing Butler or Hill but will have to look elsewhere to replace soon-to-be-gone Richard Jefferson.

And if they were looking to add Maurice Evans (a player San Antonio reportedly reached out to) as a potential fall-back solution, then they have competition from the Washington Wizards.

According to the Washington Post, there is mutual interest between Evans and the Wizards.

Evans’s agent, Roger Montgomery, said on Friday that there is “still mutual interest” between his client and the Wizards. The Wizards have been in daily conversations with Montgomery in hopes of bringing back the wing player who brought an aggressive style of play and a steadying presence after arriving in a trade deadline deal with Atlanta.

Granted, Evans may not be on the top of the Spurs wish list seeing how the more likely candidate the Spurs will be chasing is Josh Howard.

The Washington Post report also said Howard will be looking to make a decision by next week.

Nevertheless, should Howard spurn the Spurs next week, Evans could be a target for San Antonio.

If it's Evans I would rather have RJ. He is a solid backup but not a starter. Also he seems losing focus sometime on the court.

Evans, Howard. Come spurs look at your lineup. There are several guys ready to play, Green, Butler and Leonard. These are guys no less talented and young. They are part of the core.

We need to get Josh Howard or just keep Jefferson or make some trades!

i think if he wasn't undersized for a SF, he'd be ok to have.

Keeping RJ is a much better fall back plan than signing Maurice Evans.
