McDyess won't be back with Spurs this season

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

The San Antonio Spurs will not be bringing back Antonio McDyess this season.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, the Spurs have decided not to guarantee the other half of McDyess’ $5.2 million contract.

The teams acknowledged that McDyess won’t be back, and the club will get to remove $2.6 million, the non=guaranteed portion of his contract, off its player payroll for the 2011-12 season.

Antonio signed with the Spurs in 2009 and spent two seasons in black and silver. He was a solid veteran big man off the bench for the Spurs and even proved to still be a defensive presence for the team. Ask Dirk Nowitzki.

Though he never once was the player he was after his many knee injuries, he had fantastic seasons not only with San Antonio but with the Detroit Pistons where he averaged 9.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per 23.3 minutes in 2004.

So now that the Spurs will be without McDyess, this leaves Tiago Splitter, Tim Duncan, DeJuan Blair, and Matt Bonner as the crop of big men the team will likely take into the regular season. And just by looking at this, it is quite apparent the team needs help in the paint.

As far as McDyess' immediate future, he will be retiring from the league but he left the NBA and the Spurs with some great memories. Especially this highlight from last season versus the Los Angeles Lakers.

imgoing to miss mcdyess i loved watching him shoot that jump shot ..will really miss him

i like the idea of kris humphries to come in now..i think his game is very close to mcdyess' but trading the iq and some consistancy in the jump shot for more just raw athleticism getting us more blocks and reboud prodution(which we needed against the rockets)

@scottmer.. I am surprised Kris Humphries hasn't been signed yet. It's possible that he's after a lot though, which wouldn't surprise me.

@scottmer..I mean, I would try to throw maybe a 3 year 13 million contract at him and see what happens. Then again, I am not the GM, and these threads have virtually no purpose. Not to be a pessimist, but that much might still not be enough. LAWL Kim Kardashian is a joke. I guess what is good is that KH probably won't sign in LA now like everybody else. Hate the lakers lol.

Good luck A Mcdyess. So what now spurs? S. Dalembert suits the bill left by antonio. Can the spurs afford him? They have to let go of some of the shooting guards and small forwards to have money to pay dalembert.

@rtesoro440 I mean, Manu aside, they aren't actually paying them much anyways. That guy would be great, except he would want too much money. That means he probably won't sign with the spurs.

@Emicris

Now, where are the spurs going? Just now they waived steve novak after playing few minutes against the rockets. What does the spurs want? Novak is 6'10". He could have helped. Anderson didn't play well. Why not waive him? Green din't play well why not waive him? What the d-league players? If the spurs is serious, why not sign Dalembert? They can't afford him? Well, play the d-league players. Crumbs.

@rtesoro440@Emicris Are you actually serious right now? I am not trying to insult you in any way, but you ever actually watch the spurs? Your logic makes absolutely no sense. You must either be a troll or hate the spurs. Novak is a scrub, and he plays worse defense than bonner and blair. You think he is good just because he is 6'10? We might as well as start TP at the 4 in your opinion. Anderson played bad in a preseason game. Preseason games never matter. You are either an idiot or a troll. I am not sure how you make any sense.

So much for trying to his contract for something. This kinda worries me because I have no idea who they have in mind to take up McDyess's minutes. But I'll trust the front office that they'll find someone.
