As word came out earlier the San Antonio Spurs were interested in soon-to-be free agent Vince Carter, David Aldridge of TNT and Michael Lee of the Washington Post are now reporting that both free agent small forwards Caron Butler and Josh Howard will meet with the Spurs on Tuesday. Per Aldridge's twitter handle:
Caron Butler itinerary: CHI Mon, LAC Mon night/Tue, SAS Tue, NJ Wed, DET Thursday if he hasn't made up his mind yet...
Per Lee's twitter handle:
Busy week for Josh Howard: He will visit SAS on Tues. Plans to visit CHI, NJN &, though the dates haven't been set
Though the Chicago Bulls are the favored team in the sweepstakes for Butler, he hasn't ruled out the chance of signing with any of the other candidates. On Saturday, a report revealed the Spurs were a strong suitor for Butler.
As said in previous reports regarding the available small forwards, the decisions to contact their agents is most likely hinging on the theory that San Antonio may be using the amnesty clause on forward Richard Jefferson or will be looking at a deal via the trade route.
From what I’ve heard, the Spurs could be trading Jefferson, Blair, McDyess, and a first round pick for either Al Jefferson, Chris Kaman, or Andris Biedrins.
@AceNrok Yeah, well, some people on this board are suggesting that we have a look a Greg Oden? Is there a better way to waste the organizations money? Not to mention Timmy's last years with the spurs?
@AceNrok we do need a strong sf player to bolster our lineup and the big men available right now are likely not signing with us. It also shows they have faith in tiago and I'll have another mcdouble Blair
@AceNrok we know that, but if you haven't heard already, RJ might be cut and one of these guys could be his replacement.
@LFJeremy might be a bit of both. well, if we got Al Jefferson, it would be a personnel move. Kaman would be both because Kaman's contract is about $12 million right now, and the combined contracts of RJ, Blair and McDyess would be about $15 million, so we'd save $3 million, but i think that's too much to give up for Kaman, especially if we put a 1st rounder in the deal. as for Biedrins, well i know the Warriors are going to try and get Tyson Chandler, and they are trying to re-shop Biedrins, but his contract is like $9 million, which is the same amount as RJ's. if we offered this package to the Warriors, they would likely have to add 1 or 2 players to make it close because they want all the cap space to make a bid for Chandler. of course, this is only a rumor, so the chances of either of these scenarios is unlikely. however, i've heard from WOAI that the Spurs are interested in Kaman.
