Scratch another potential big man off the list

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

For the San Antonio Spurs, one of the most glaring needs is size. After Tim Duncan and Tiago Splitter, there is a considerable drop off in big men for San Antonio.

Recently, there was some hope this need may be addressed when Erazem Lorbek - whose rights were acquired on draft night - reportedly was considering to make his way to the NBA and the Spurs. However, he signed a two-year extension with his current team Regal Barcelona, all but ending any thoughts Spurs fans could see a legit big man in black and silver.

Another potential big man who reportedly drew interest from the Spurs and worked out for San Antonio and various other teams was Gustavo "The Titan" Ayon. However, if there was any chance Ayon could make it to the NBA and hopefully join San Antonio, has ended.

According to El Universal, Ayon said he will fulfill the remaining two-years of his contract with his current team, Baloncesto Fuenlabrada in Spain, thanks in part to the current NBA lockout.

The Mexican player said he will fulfill his contract with the Fuenlabrada, which is valid for two years, which puts an end to rumors that puts [him] in the NBA.

No Lorbek. No Ayon. It would seem the search for a big man continues for the Spurs.

The difficulty in signing a big man rest with the spurs really. Again I repeat, when was the last time this team seriously considered signing a big man? Tim Duncan. It let go of l. Scola and i. Mahinmi. This team insists the lack of available rookies. Precisely this sole reason should push then to draft a new, young and big guy who they can mold according to their system. On draft days, they draft some only to end just that. Last year tyhey drafted r. richards and where is he now? I suppose they are waiting for him to grow older like t. Splitter. During the draft, there were big men available at #29 and 59 yet they elected as usual small players. Why doesn't the spurs for once take the risk and sign a rookie big man? Are they waiting for t.Duncan to retire and a. McDyess to hang his sneakers before acting? Mgnt and coaching are REACTIVE not PROACTIVE. Investment comes before profit!

Addendum: I have nothing against c. joseph or k. leonard or a. Hanga or d. Bertans. I am just a spurs fan who wants to see them win the championship. If the columnist of this article can talk with the spurs mgnt, will you please remind them of their history. They never won the championship w/o big men like d. Robinson, f. Oberto, e. Francesco, r. Horry. They were not ideal or perfect players but, they were tall, big men. Perfection comes with time. Aside from r. Richards tell them to look around for 3 or 4 more young, tall, big men undrafted and mold them they want them to be! DON'T just stash them away - Train them. NO short cuts.

@rtesoro440 I agree. But the trick is to find the right one. SAS just need a banger, intimidator, rebounding kind of big.

@JeffProjectSpurs @rtesoro440 They will not find one unless, they give it a try. As I said there many rookies out there not drafted who are tall, young, and as put it - banger, intimidator and rebounding kind of big. They, as I see it, they take risk on small guys so, for a change why not a big guy with the description you just stated.
