Grizzlies confident about series with Spurs

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

Usually the eighth seed in the NBA playoffs rarely pull the upset and defeat the number one ranked team. There are exceptions such as the 2007 eighth seeded Golden State Warriors defeating the number one seeded Dallas Mavericks but will the eighth seeded Memphis Grizzlies shock the world and defeat the number one ranked San Antonio Spurs?

The Grizzlies believe they can and think the Spurs are a good matchup for them.

"We feel pretty confident about it," said Grizzlies forward Darrell Arthur. "I think it's a good matchup for us."

Arthur: "I feel like we can win a series."

Mike Conley: "There's no reason we can't play the Spurs and we can't beat the Spurs."

Look I can appreciate the Grizzlies confidence. Memphis has to go into a series with the right mentality and it's no surprise they feel they can win the series. They tested the Spurs in the regular season, went toe-to-toe versus the Spurs, and split the season-series with the Spurs. All this without their star Rudy Gay.

Open mouth, insert (foot). This is anyone's series. Jeff was right to guess that the Spurs would sweat this matchup.

just for the record, Jeff, the Grizzlies were not one of the few teams to beat our guys at the AT&T Center. just wanted to point that out.

as far as the Grizzlies' comments goes, I can't blame them for having confidence, but for them to beat a team that has so much playoff and championship experience and has only lost 5 games at home all season (and having home-court advantage) is highly unlikely to me. like i said before, the Grizzlies are a good, tough team, but our guys know how to get the job done. GO SPURS GO!!!

@LFJeremy @Dave_McNulla I'm not going to say it's going to be an easy series win but Memphis may make the Spurs sweat a bit. Z-Bo kills the Spurs.

I don't know if the Spurs will win it all, they have some weaknesses. I am not worried about them losing to the Grizz.

First, if they were that good, why are they an eighth seed? Even in the East, they'd be a 6th seed at best (something they could have done if they had any balls).

Second, if they beat the Spurs, which probably the third or fourth worse upset in playoffs history behind Mavs/Warriors and Sonics/Nuggets, then the Spurs were who the national media says they are. But nobody can take away the four titles.

I'm not worried. I doubt the Spurs are worried. Nobody is going to overlook the Grizz, which is why the Spurs will win in 4 or 5 games.

I heard this in 99, 01, 03, 06, etc. 8 seeds are supposed to believe in themselves, then lose.
