Who is the Spurs' MVP? Print E-mail

After failing to reach the NBA finals for two consecutive seasons and with the core aging, the Spurs did their best to build a roster that is arguably the most talented and deepest in recent years. This was done in the hopes of returning to the NBA throne as champions.

But as it turned out, the pieces have not fallen into place for the Spurs. At least not yet.

They struggled early on in the season partly because of chemistry issues, partly due to the decline of their once dominant defense and partly due to inconsistent play. Losing to depleted teams, not sustaining leads, and an overall lack of a "killer instinct" have cost the Spurs wins and made fans want to pull their hair out.

To add more misery, the Spurs have dealt with injuries to their key players. Most notably Tony Parker who has dealt with a list of injuries this season and will miss the remainder of the regular season due to a hand injury.

tim-duncanhypedDespite all this, the Spurs are currently in seventh place in the Western Conference playoff race, have a winning record, and are on a three-game winning streak.

So how did the Spurs manage all this when it sounds like doom and gloom in San Antonio? You can look at their stellar bench play, or coach Pop but the answer is simple. Like in the past when the going gets tough, they turned to their old reliables -- Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili.

Both have been important cogs in the Spurs machine this season.

Spurs fans hear how Duncan is on the decline but he is proving his detractors wrong this season. Manu, while starting off slow, is finally looking like the Manu Spurs fans know. He is the spark for this Spurs team.

However, this leads to the question, "Who is the Spurs' MVP this season?" With the NBA regular season winding down and with NBA fans already talking about the league MVP, why can't Spurs fans begin to discuss who is the team's MVP?

With that being said, let's take a closer look at both of these spectacular players and what they have done this season.

Tim Duncan

Duncan continues to be the steady foundation for the Spurs
. After 61 games this season, he led the team in scoring, rebounds and blocked shots averaging 18.7 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.64 blocks. His 73.8% shooting from the stripe and 51.3% field goal shooting are both good for third best in his career. And he has done all these while averaging a career low of 31.8 minutes per game.

Even when he could not get it going on the offensive end, Duncan did other things to allow the Spurs to secure victories this season. Case in point his 27 rebound night against the Atlanta Hawks and his 26 rebound night against the Indiana Pacers when he shot 4-23 from the field.

Besides that, Duncan's dedication to winning and loyalty to the Spurs are unquestioned. After a battle with tendinitis which limited his effectiveness last year, Duncan agreed with Coach Popovich to start his offseason workouts a month later, sans the tire tossing.

He also worked hard in the offseason to shed 15 pounds since a lighter frame would lessen the burden on his knees. With the way he is playing this season, I would say it worked.
manu_ginobili2

Manu Ginobili

Manu started the season out of sync due to injuries and coming off a long offseason of not playing ball but has played better basketball since February. In 59 games, he has averaged 14.7 points 4.8 assist and 1.5 steals. His 86.7% free throw shooting and 4.8 assist per game are both career highs and his 1.5 steals per game leads the team this season.

More importantly, Manu's recent resurgence and great clutch plays have given enough hope that this season is not lost. After seven games this month, the Spurs are 6-1 as Ginobili leads the team with 18.9 points and 6 assist while shooting 54% from the field and 91.3% from the free throw line.

When Duncan is having an off night, the Spurs can usually rely on Ginobili to pick up the slack.  And it's not uncommon for Spurs fans to hear the following "The Spurs go as Manu goes."

But more than just stats, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili remain the leaders of the Spurs. On the court, they provide the young Spurs the veteran leadership which cannot be summed up in a statistical analysis. I
f they can sustain their level of play as the post-season approaches, it will not be surprising to see the Spurs make a strong winning run towards the end of regular season.

Nonetheless, the question still remains who is the Spurs' MVP this season? Is it Duncan or Ginobili? Am I out of my mind to even think it's anyone else on the team besides Duncan? You decide! Tell us what you think.

For me Duncan is the MVP the guy is just consistently solid without him, specially in the early part of the season the Spurs will be out of the playoff picture right now.

I'm not sure you can pick just one player. Duncan carried us at the start of the season, now Ginobili is caring the torch. You could even put Hill in the mix, he's pretty much our third option now.

George Hill is a good player but we talked about MVP for the Spurs. The choices is only either Duncan or Ginobili. Duncan gets my vote because he is the one who can steady the Spurs. Ginobili is amazing but Duncan is better because he will always be there when the Spurs needed him and he takes a back seat if other players are performing very well all that matters to him is to win! It's a close call but Duncan is the Spurs MVP!

duncan for the earlier part of the year but manu is coming through now and if he continues his stellar play down the stretch then its gotta be him.
Ginobili
written by Aguitarninja, March 16, 2010
I love the consistency in which Timmy has been playing with but as far as MVP I think Ginobili will earn because now as were on the home stretch and as we get into the playoffs it will be Ginobili to make those game winning 3's and last millisecond out of bounds saves yeah Duncan has been playin great all year and Manu may have started a bit slower but it's about who finishes strongest and Ginobili can taste it!!

I have loved the play of DeJuan Blair all season. He's been awesome. I know Tim and Manu have carried the load all season, and George Hill has provided a much needed lift, but if we could cast a vote, I'd vote for DeJuan. And let me add (again) I STILL BELIEVE!!!!! 2010 THE YEAR OF THE SPURS!!!!! GO SPURS GO!!!!!

It's TD for me, his defense is very underrated it's amazing that the Spurs are still at the top half in the league when comes to defense considering that they only have ONE legitimate big on the defensive side of the floor.

TD over Manu!

written by SpursFanHenry, March 16, 2010
Manu is the ultimate competitor, TD is the steady rock behind the Spurs. The Spurs need them both to win it all. It's a tie for me.

I would say Manu, the Spurs seem to be tougher team to beat when he plays well. Like what many people say "The Spurs go as Manu goes"

Tough question, as it comes down to Timmy and Manu, but Manu answered against the HEAT! Did you see his intensity and leadership? What clutch shooting! (Notice that Tony is not in the running.)

Can anyone read lips? If so, what did Manu say after hitting that clutch 3? I have a few guesses.

1)Insight about someone’s mother and the horse she rode in on.
2)Commentary on the health care bill.
3)Things I don’t know how to say in Spanish, but wish I could.
4)“Pop goes the weasel! – ha ha ha ha – OOPS, I hope no one heard that.” followed by a "Yeah Baby!"
Tim duncan is the man!

"The Spurs go as Duncan goes". Duncan is a Superstar caliber player he is in his thirties, and with reduced minutes, is still a league leader in rebounds and blocked shots. He is has been and will be the difference in us winning the championship!

Seems like there is no clear cut favorite Spurs MVP. That is understandable when you have to choose between two great players it's always a tough choice.

Timmy is admired for his steadiness and amazing consistency, while Manu is liked y many because of his clutch plays and great passion for the game and his emotions are overflowing when he plays.

-Albert-, you may have a point about George Hill because he has really stepped up his game this year for the Spurs and I respect you're opinion. But I think when it comes to MVP talks it should only be between TD and Manu. Like you said Hill is our third option and probably our third best player right now.

Beverly, If the Spurs can continue playing this well towards the end of the season, we have every reason to BELIEVE! Obviously you like Blair, he is good player of the bench and can provide energy. But if the Spurs wins a championship this year they have to depend on their old hands: Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili. Don't get me wrong I like Blair too but voting him as Spurs' MVP is too much for me, although he gets my vote as Rookie of the Year.

Big Whit, nice observation on Manu, he was great tonight! When he made that clutch 3, I think this is what he said. "C'mon Spurs will extend me or what? I'm awesome!" smilies/grin.gif

SpursFanHenry, of all the readers commenters you are the only one who played it safe, not choosing between TD and Manu means you have the best of both worlds. I may also mean that you just can't decide smilies/smiley.gif

It's nice to see new commenters/readers on the site like -Albert-, YANI, BETTY STONAKER, kirkmd, and Aguitarninja.

And to everyone thanks for your continued support and for always keeping the discussions here lively and interesting. We appreciate it. Keep the comments coming!smilies/wink.gif

Andrew, I agree even at 33 Duncan is consistent as ever and can still score, rebound and block shot amazing huh? Manu on the other hand is weaving his magic once again we need him to play that way if we hope to win another championship this season.

Bottom line, these two players will have to bring their A game for the Spurs to sustain their winning streak!

Thanks for your continued support and for dropping by and commenting. We appreciate it!

definitely MANU! season started out with him still trying to get back on his feet but now that he's gotten back to that same level of play he was on years ago, he's just invincible. it doesn't matter who's injured, just as long as a healthy manu is playing. GO SPURS, GO!!!

MVP

I'm from Argentina, I've not seen all games this season, but there is something i would like to comment, both TD and MG are great and they always do their best at this time of the season, i hope the spurs be contenders this playoffs, for me the MVP is the team, they are playing like old days making assists and running the court.

Something to comment: Why do you think that MG plays better when TP is not playing?

Its Tim Duncan. Not just on a statistical level but on every level of the game. I love manu to death but there is something you guys just dont understand. We have seen manu and tony have shitty moments. And for periods of time even. Have you ever in your mind doubted that Duncan wouldnt be consistently great? I mean really? Even in his "bad" games he pulls down 27 boards and we WIN by letting others take over if they are in fact being successful. NEVER in the entire career of me watching Tim duncan has he ever let me or other spurs fans down for a consistent period of time.
Whats going on spurs fans? You and i both know who has been the MVP of this team since hes been drafted and its none other then Tim Duncan.

All i know is when Duncan retires alot of you are going to realize that you have been taking Duncan for granted. Hes consistenly great.
Not only one
written by Ref_o, March 17, 2010
I do not understand the imperative need to choose "the best" when everyone has different functions. I think the MVP is the trio "TD MG TP". In previous seasons by adding a "Bruce Bowen". Or any of you doubt that Bruce Bowen did not have the importance of the other three listed above, and even more watching the defensive problems with the Spurs now?
What about Hill
written by Iowan Spur, March 17, 2010
Duncan is by far my favorite player in the NBA, but how about George Hill as the team's MVP? Would the Spurs be in the same situation if it weren't for Hill picking up Parker's absence?
...
written by Jeff Co-Founder Project Spurs, March 17, 2010
@lowan I can see why you'd pick Hill. Guy stepped in as a Sophomore baller and plays like a vet. But in the end the SAS go as TD and MG go.

In the end I am picking TD.

Thanks to everyone for leaving comments.

Migs, Argentinian assassin? I like that sounds like a killer and Manu has been playing like one lately.

emzie, Manu is a no doubt a great player. But as good as he is, he needs help. I respect your opinion but still does matter who gets injured. With Tony out, they well need the rest of the guys healthy.

Matias, I think Manu plays "better" when Tony is not playing because he gets a lot more touches which could translate more shots or more scoring opportunities. Nice take on the Spurs team by the way.

AJH, yeah Manu's passion for the game is unbelievable. It's a joy to watch isn't it?

TWex, I agree on your take on Duncan. TD is a guy who quietly and consistently gets the job done. In my opinion he is the Spurs' foundation.

Ref_o, Having to choose between Manu and TD gives Spurs a chance to interact and express their opinions on the site. Don't get me wrong, it takes more than one person to win a championship and for that to happen everyone needs to their job. But at the end of the day, while we all know that everyone on the team deserves credit; a few players will stand-out and be the leader of the team. In this case it's TD and Manu.

Iowan, Hill definitely deserves some credit, but like Jeff said " SAS go as TD and MG go".

Again, thanks everyone for expressing your opinions and sharing your thoughts on this matter. We appreciate it! Go! Spurs! Go!
