A Midseason Look At The McDyess & Bogans Signings Print E-mail

With most attention being given to the Spurs' continued struggles and Richard Jefferson's underwhelming performance this season, it's good to give emphasis on the Spurs' other offseason additions that play important roles in the Spurs' rotation. Namely Antonio McDyess and Keith Bogans.

While their signings was not as hyped as getting Richard Jefferson or drafting DeJuan Blair, they might be the additional pieces needed by the Spurs for a successful title run this season.

mcdyess2Let us start with Antonio McDyess. Bringing in McDyess helped fill the void left by Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto. He is a solid veteran perceived as a player who can complement Duncan's game.

He has proven in the past that he can hit the mid-range jumper with consistency and can help out in getting rebounds. He is just what Duncan needed by his side in the paint.

But McDyess struggled early on with the Spurs and people started to wonder just how much he has left. For the season, he is averaging 6.2 points and 5.5 rebounds in 21 minutes of action. A far cry compared to his season average of 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds just a year ago with the Pistons.

While his slow start could be attributed to the fact he is still learning and trying fit in to an entirely new system in San Antonio, he is also known for being a slow starter and usually find his rhythm during the second half of the season.

Unsurprisingly, he has been playing solid basketball as of late averaging 12.2 points and 5.4 rebounds in his last five outings while shooting 63% from the field. That is a welcome development for a Spurs team that needs more inside presence, toughness, court savvy and energy on the floor.

Whether McDyess' resurgence is a start of good things to come only time will tell. But if he continues to sustain his improved play throughout the season, the Spurs' front office will look like geniuses once again.

That brings us to Keith Bogans. We called the Bogans' signing an “under-the-radar” move because unlike Jefferson or McDyess, he was not big name acquisition. But with the departure of Bruce Bowen, getting Bogans was a no-brainer because he can provide much needed defense on the perimeter and can shoot the 3 at a fairly decent rate -- 35% for his career and 38% this season.

bogansdefendsDon’t get me wrong, Bogans can’t replace Bruce. But he hustles and is a tough defender. I actually see him as poor man's version Bruce Bowen.

His numbers will not "wow" you either. He is averaging only 4.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.3 assist in 20 minutes of playing time. Although his 42.3% shooting from the field is a career high.

However, Bogans has been more aggressive lately and his production have shown some improvements. He averaged 5.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists on 53.3% shooting from the floor in the team's last five games.

But the Spurs they don’t expect much scoring from Bogans. Instead they need him to be a steady presence on the defensive end of the floor and any points he gives could be considered a bonus.

More than just numbers, the most important thing for both McDyess and Bogans is to continue to get comfortable with their roles and gain more confidence as the season goes on. Their veteran smarts will come in handy for the Spurs in the playoffs.

And although it could be said that McDyess and Bogans have been under-performing, there are encouraging signs. McDyess is starting to find his spots and while Bogans is not producing much on offense, his perimeter defense is arguably helping to the Spurs’ cause.

What do you guys think? Are they playing out as expected or are they turning out to be major disappointments? Send us your thoughts and opinions on this matter.

McDyess is playing well and looked like the McDyess of old. I hope he continues to play that way. Bogans is inconsistent but I like his defensive intensity.

I like the Bogans signing because he just plays hard and hustles and his points mostly comes from open jumpers. Antonio McDyess is playing sub par as far as I'm concerned. He should be playing better than this to earn a regular spot at the starting line up. Right now Blair is the 2nd best big man for the Spurs.

Bogans can play defense but the Spurs needs another perimeter defender other than him, maybe give Hairston more playing time?

I think McDyess is still effective but his minutes should be limited to 20-25 minutes per game whether starting or off the bench.

I think Bogans is playing as expected tough defense with some 3 point shooting that is all we can get from him.

McDyess is a different story, as you said when the Spurs signed him they see a guy who can complement Duncan and I agree with that.

But now the guy who is playing along side Duncan happens to be Blair, a Rookie undersized Power Forward because DeJuan Blair is playing way better than McDyess. In my opinion, Antonio McDyess and Jefferson are both offseason failures up to this point.

The Spurs don't need a double double from McDyess. They only need him to provide additional hustle, rebounding and mid range shooting. I hoping he gets better in the second half of the season because the Spurs will need him for the stretch run.

Bogans on the other hand is a good pick for the Spurs. He is doing his job on defense.

It seems like the common sentiment is Blair is playing better than McDyess, I wouldn't argue with that because Blair has been a rebounding machine and is a pleasant surprise for the Spurs.

However, if McDyess can sustain his improved play I think the Spurs will prefer him to start beside Duncan. Because 1.)He is veteran and has a high basketball IQ and 2.)He is a more well rounded offensive player than Blair.

That said, I still think the Spurs should give enough minutes for Blair whether he stays on the starting lineup or come from the Bench.

The point is McDyess needs to play better basketball because they will need his experience in come playoff time.

And also, I agree with most of you guys about Bogans. He is earning minutes because of his defense, and it's great to see him provide some outside shooting for the Spurs.

Thanks all for dropping by and for giving us you're thoughts... We appreciate it!

I think the Spurs lackluster performance can be squarely put on Pops and the coaching staff. They have gone 180 degrees away from their identity: 2 bigs and stiffling defense. Instead Pops have been going small ball and rapid offense. They must get back their D and keep playing 2 bigs. Both McDyess and Jefferson have been always losing their defensive rotation. It is not their offense that is disappointing, rather it is their defense that is missing. Pops should probably put in Ratliff and Bogan or Hill, more. Blair is superb coming from the bench but not as a starter and not at crunch time because he, too, has always been losing his defensive rotation.

First of all, it's always great to see new readers to this site welcome at PS Alvin and Pinoy from Oz. Both of you have good points about the Spurs.

I agree with you Pinoy from Oz, it's the Spurs' defense that needs whole a lot of fixing.

Thanks for commenting and keep it coming!
Shore up on "D".

I have no problem with the off season acquisitions. The problem is playing good enough team defense to close out games. This is not an impossible thing to do and there is adequate time to figure it out.We have shown improvement
it is wise to stay positive.

Yeah, defense needs to improve the Spurs are loosing way too many close games because they can't make a defensive stop. That is the reason why I think Hairston has to play because he can defend the perimeter like Bogans.

Maybe the Spurs need to put Finley on the IL and let Hairston play? Just my 2 cents.

Andrew, I admire your positive approach. Since you start commenting here at PS, all your inputs are about hope, patience and positivity for the Spurs. You are truly a great fan, I hope the Spurs will figure things out like you said. And the current Road Trip will be very important for the team.

Alex, Hairston has been great during summer league, he proved then that he can shoot, defend and even attack the basket. Also he has done great things for the Toros. The idea of bringing him in instead of Finley intrigues me, because Finley and Bonner are struggling since returning from injuries. But Pop seem to prefer veteran players over the young ones so it may not happen. Maybe Pop can read this and hear us out....

Thanks for commenting, and keeping the discussions here lively.

I agree with the analysis

For a title run, Gregg Poppovich should use these players as the following:

For K.Bogans, of course defense will be the most expected contribution. But Bogans should work hardly his 3 point percentage (ex: 1000 shoot per day as John Paxon...) before the play-off. Indeed, during the play-off, teams will not much attention on Bogans as Manu or R.Mason. So Bogans may have a lot of open shoot during the play-off.

For MacDyess, it is quite simple, he have to improve his collective defense and hep in the paint. Indeed, previous title were won mainly with the SPURS COLLECTIVE defense in the paint. Besise Poppovich should use more and more McDyess good percentage and allow him more shoo tin the pain, so that Tim and Tony will find an more "opened" paint

i say bring back bruce bowan and let him and keith play. have one or the other in the game at all times to keep the pressure up on the defensive end---and have both in game at same time when we have the lead at the end of a game.

Moos, I agree Bogans should improve his 3 point shooting because that is mostly the shot he has to take maybe bring up his percentage to 42-45%. That would be very nice.

mojojoejojo, Bruce Bowen is a great player and a heck of a guy, I love him to as a Spur. Be his age has caught up with him. Last season, he clearly is a step slow on D, so he might not be the answer. But I do respect your opinion on this.
